Gilding on Paper

Working on paper in a color medium of your choice (the instructor demonstrates watercolor), paint a simple flower set against a sumptuous gold background as seen in many Medieval and Renaissance paintings. Learn the ancient technique of gilding: applying thin gold leaf on paper in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process. A materials fee of approximately $50 for a gilding kit and flowers is payable on the first day of class. Please bring lunch.

Claire has achieved the highest accolades in her endless pursuit of artistic expression with a strong educational background in fine arts. Creating an Indoor Garden

Learn to select the right plants for various locations, based on light levels, temperatures, and aesthetics. Focus on unusual plant material, tools and supplies, and techniques for keeping your plants in good shape (grooming, nutrition, and pest control). Successful indoor gardening requires knowledge of both plant material and growing techniques.

Certificate Requirement, Classroom Hours: 4

This individualized intensive training offers an overview of horticultural therapy treatment in a physical rehabilitation setting. The focus is on physical medicine and rehabilitation-history, philosophy, and team functions. Participate in horticulture treatment sessions with a focus on patient functioning, treatment goals, and precautions. Directions are mailed with your confirmation letter.

Claire Won Kang, BFA, AIFD is the Floral Design Program Coordinator. Claire has achieved the highest accolades in her endless pursuit of artistic expression with a strong educational background in fine arts. Since 1991 she has taught at the Garden, where she received the 2005 "Instructor of the Year" award in recognition of her significant contributions to excellence in teaching. She passionately believes in the art of floral design and brings a unique perspective to the classroom. Claire was an invited designer at many AIFD National Symposia. Her designs been awarded with "Best of Show" at the Philadelphia Flower Show several times since 1996. She was also a guest designer at the AIFD London Forum in 2003 and for numerous promotional floral conventions and Garden Club shows in various states.

Large Evergreen Wreath or Five-Foot Garland

Choose from two projects. Using a large assortment of fresh greens (boxwood, blue spruce, ivy, cedar, juniper, etc.), we thicken and broaden a 24" pre-made fresh balsam base or white pine roping. Then decorate your project with a colorful assortment of flowers, hydrangea, baby's breath, nuts, berries, pods, and much more. If you like, bring additional decorative items: a string of holiday lights, shells, feathers, large pods, special ribbon, or pre-made bow. Students need to bring clippers and garden gloves.

Holiday Hydrangea Centerpiece

Create a holiday centerpiece that will last for seasons to come. Arrange a ceramic bowl with beautiful dried and painted burgundy red Hydrangeas. Use many other botanical accents available to add such as greens, nuts, berries, pods, cones, fragrant herbs, flowers, and ferns. Approximate finished size is 12 to 15" width, and 10" tall.
