Swimming pool design has changed rapidly with computer technology. A wide variety of pools-each of which has its own set of design and installation requirements-are now available. Examine the latest trends and the pros and cons of pool designs. Explore decking and lighting options; selection of equipment such as filters, heaters, pumps, and sanitizers; energy saving techniques; and safety issues such as fences and anti-entrapment devices. Gain insight on how to choose and work with a pool contractor.

Explore the aesthetic characteristics, design dynamics, and spiritual orientation of Zen influenced Japanese temple and tea garden styles. Examine the relationship between landscape painting, gardens, and the landscape that inspired them. Review the function of stone and plants, and the criteria for their selection and use. Emphasis in class is placed on the adaptation of these concepts in ways that are appropriate for our culture and environment. Please bring lunch.

AutoCAD is the standard for computer-based drafting in both architecture and landscape design. Learn the basic techniques for creating two-dimensional plans. No AutoCAD or computer graphics experience is necessary, but experience with Windows is required. It is highly recommended that students purchase AutoCAD software for home practice. For landscape contractors and designers who want to improve their estimating skills and business profitability, this course teaches the methods for compiling the critical components of the estimate: materials, labor, overhead, and contingencies. Also learn how to use estimates to stay profitable and compete successfully in today's competitive business climate.

Prismacolor, AD, or Pantone markers are acceptable.
Prismacolor markers can be applied to photocopies without smudging. AD markers last longer and come in a number of very useful colors. Lightest colors are most useful. In AD markers, for example, cr?me, buff, beige, Naples yellow, warm gray #1, willow green, light ivy, sapphire blue, mauve, indigo blue, and pale flesh are all very useful colors. A wide variety of greens is useful, again in the lighter colors. Only a few bright colors are needed, such as light/medium red, blue, and orange. Black and a very darkblue, such as navy or indigo, are important for shadows.
8. Colored Pencils
Prismacolor, Derwent, and/or Caran d'Ache pencils are suggested. You cannot have too many colors to chose from. Greens should range from yellow-green to blue- green, and from light to dark. Similarly, blues should range from green-blue to red- blue. Numerous earth tones, both light and dark, are needed. These should include such colors as terra cotta, tan, beige, yellow ochre, warm gray, light brown. For working on toned paper (at the end of the term), white and near-white colors will be called for.
