Explore the basic principles underlying good gardening, including the structure and physiological processes of plants and their relationships to the environments in which they grow. You learn not only what to do, but why! Topics include soils and their improvement, seed sowing, vegetative propagation, planting, pruning, watering, weeding, mulching, shading, ventilation, and disease and pest control.

Classroom Hours: 12

Understand how the nature of soil affects the overall productivity of plants. Theory is kept to a minimum and practical applications are stressed. Topics include soil formation, physical properties of soil, soil-water relationships, and management techniques, such as irrigation, drainage, and fertilization. Basic soil sampling, pH, and nutrient testing are introduced.

Please note that this course is not the same as Soil Science I-HRT 301.

Build on fundamental gardening techniques by learning a variety of environmentally focused practices. Emphasis will be placed on improving soil structure, enhancing soil microbial activity, and increasing nutrient levels through cultivation and tillage practices as well as growing cover crops and adding plant and animal waste. How to minimize external inputs and maximize natural processes such as capturing rain will be covered in detail.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Gardening-GAR 301.

Learn the true meaning of "organic." Explore the philosophy of the organic method, its advantages and limitations, the biological principles upon which it is based, and the practical techniques used to implement it. Learn the processes that satisfy the needs of plants in nature, and how to use these processes to grow healthy ornamentals, vegetables, and lawns. Learn how to incorporate gardens and landscapes into the ecology of the natural world. Please bring lunch.

Suggested Prerequisite: Soil Science for Gardeners-GAR 302.

Plant propagation is a basic horticultural skill. Survey the theory and practice of propagating woody and herbaceous plants using traditional methods, such as the use of seeds, and cuttings. Gain hands-on experience practicing simple propagation methods.

Classroom Hours: 15

Learn to select the right plants for various locations, based on light levels, temperatures, and aesthetics. Focus on unusual plant material, tools and supplies, and techniques for keeping your plants in good shape (grooming, nutrition, and pest control). Successful indoor gardening requires knowledge of both plant material and growing techniques.

Container gardening know-how is in high demand, particularly in urban settings, such as ours. Learn how to create a container garden that is at once functional and attractive, and discover techniques for getting your container plantings to grow and thrive throughout all four seasons. For many gardeners, flowers are what gardens are all about. Here is an opportunity to learn how, when, and where to use bulbs, annuals, biennials, and perennials to create an aesthetically pleasing low maintenance garden.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Gardening I-GAR 301.

Study the history of herbalism and herb garden design. Take an in-depth look at some of the most historically important herbs, their uses, and cultivation requirements. Ancient as well as contemporary uses of individual herbs are discussed. A visit to the LuEsther T. Mertz Library to view centuries-old herbals completes the class.

Make your garden shine all year long! Design mixed borders where colorful spring bulbs and early flowering shrubs give way to summer-blooming perennials and graceful ornamental grasses. Next, consider plants with colorful fall foliage, vibrant winter fruits, and interesting bark textures to ensure that each season provides intrigue and interest.

Botanical nomenclature can add a new dimension to your gardening by helping you identify and know plants better. For example, we can infer from the name Portulaca that plants of this genus carry a milky sap, because "portu-" means carry (as in portable) and "-laca" refers to milk (as in lactose). Review rules of nomenclature and pronunciation and learn about the history of the binomial system in use today.

Permaculture is an integrated design science focused on creating ecologically intelligent human settlements and gardens which cooperate with nature. Permaculture incorporates traditional methods, intuition, and in-depth site analysis. Learn how to create beneficial interrelationships among elements of a landscape design, manipulate microclimates in the landscape, and design cultivated ecosystems. Please bring lunch.

Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Gardening I-GAR 301 and Soil Science for Gardeners-GAR 302.

Study groups of orchid genera and their shared physical attributes, and learn to deduce the cultural needs of orchids based on physical characteristics like pseudobulbs, cuticles, and velamen roots. Divide monopodial and sympodial orchids, root prune, and practice pest identification. Experiment with methods of slab mounting on various media. Learn to improve in-home growing conditions by adding different types of grow lights, humidifiers, and drywells.

In this practical follow-up to Fundamentals of Gardening I, see demonstrations and have an opportunity to practice some of the techniques discussed. Soil structure and amendments, composting, planting and transplanting techniques, pruning, winter preparation, and tool use and care are covered. Please bring lunch.

Improve the value and appearance of your property by learning techniques for pruning small ornamental trees, evergreens, and deciduous shrubs. Discover when and how to rejuvenate old plantings, encourage new vigorous growth, and how to keep them under control. Lectures are enhanced with slides, demonstrations, and "hands-on" experience outside. Please bring lunch for classes meeting all day. Dress for the weather.

Learn traditional and cutting-edge techniques in garden and landscape maintenance, including planting methods, care, and maintenance regimens for trees, shrubs, turf, and perennial gardens. Discuss site analysis and plant selection, principles of IPM (Integrated Pest Management), organic gardening practices, and a calendar of landscape and garden activities. While this class has no prerequisite, it presumes basic knowledge of gardening.
