Gardening

The comprehensive Gardening Certificate curriculum provides a cohesive, structured approach to learning fundamental, as well as advanced gardening practices. Core courses provide a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of gardening, building the students’ confidence to pursue specialty electives that enrich their basic training. Select from two Certificate tracks: Gardening (track 1), a broad-based, traditional approach; and the new Environmental Gardening (track 2), designed for those working in sustainable landscape endeavors. Professionally trained and industry-seasoned instructors bring their extensive experience to the classroom.

The Program Coordinator is Leda Meredith, who holds a Certificate in Ethnobotany from the Botanical Garden and is winner of the 2007–2008 Teaching Excellence Award from Adelphi University. A professional horticulturist who works with both corporate and private clients in New York City, Leda has been teaching numerous Gardening courses at the Botanical Garden since 2002, with a focus on growing food and on horticultural techniques. She has been featured on The Martha Stewart Show, is the author of Botany, Ballet, & Dinner from Scratch: A Memoir with Recipes, is a contributing writer to numerous gardening publications, and hosts her own blog, “Leda’s Urban Homestead”.
