Understand how the nature of soil affects the overall productivity of plants. Theory is kept to a minimum and practical applications are stressed. Topics include soil formation, physical properties of soil, soil-water relationships, and management techniques, such as irrigation, drainage, and fertilization. Basic soil sampling, pH, and nutrient testing are introduced.

Botanical nomenclature can add a new dimension to your gardening by helping you identify and know plants better. For example, we can infer from the name Portulaca that plants of this genus carry a milky sap, because "portu-" means carry (as in portable) and "-laca" refers to milk (as in lactose). Review rules of nomenclature and pronunciation and learn about the history of the binomial system in use today.

Learn how to feed the soil so it can feed your plants. Gain an understanding of the cornerstones of soil chemistry: pH and its effects on nutrient availability to plants and the ionic ex-change capacities of soil. Learn how to identify and manage the common turf and landscape weeds found in residential and commercial sites. A variety of weed control methods, including non-chemical approaches, will be examined. Weed biology, biochemical pathways, herbicides and their application techniques, equipment calibration and care will be studied, as will seasonal weed control programs. This course combines class study and hands-on pruning, matching knowledge to practice. Topics include woody plant structure and physiology as it relates to pruning; correct pruning techniques and tools; pruning timing; and pruning as an integral part of plant health care. Pruning of trees and shrubs, conifers and broadleaves, and evergreen and deciduous plants are covered. Creation and maintenance of hedges is considered, along with authentic pollarding techniques. Come dressed for field work, and bring bypass pruners if you have them.

Any activity that disturbs or changes the land in any manner within a particular distance of the perimeter of a wetland is subject to governmental regulation and approval. Gain knowledge before initiation of any project to avoid mistakes that could result in governmental fines and/or adverse environmental consequences. Learn how to identify and recognize the presence and extent of a wetland by applying the defining state regulations. Study soil appearance and pertinent environmental characteristics in the classroom and on the NYBG grounds at the Mitsubishi Wild Wetlands Trail. Dress appropriately for outdoors.

Learn how to develop a garden using annuals and perennials with an eye on maintenance. Study techniques for in-season and post-season care of beds and borders containing both. Hear about the use and impact of containers as well as tropical and woody plant material in your garden. An emphasis is placed on soil management, basic pest identification, and organic controls. In all sites, from management of storm water runoff to riparian buffers, proper wetland management is important for improving and maintaining water quality and for preserving the natural beauty. Explore the ways you can work with engineers, architects, and planning boards to improve your land ethic and sustainability practices.

Welcome to the exciting new field of ecological restoration. Learn to design sustainable natural landscapes using native plants and plant communities. Topics include increasing biodiversity, improving wildlife habitats and learning to conserve our precious natural resources. Management techniques include control of invasive species, wildlife management, and soil bioengineering. Learn about the complex relationship of the soil food web from compost teas to mycorrhizal and bacterial components of healthy soil. Please bring lunch.

Take the mystery out of the design and construction of drainage with this practical approach to drainage and erosion control, from installing a catch basin or dry well to managing storm water properly. All aspects of grading and redirection of storm water using swales, berms, landforms, and contouring are covered. Learn to bend and shape the land. Using simple techniques and new technology learn how to conserve and protect our precious natural resources of soil and water. This course is designed for horticulturists who are responsible for maintaining or directing the maintenance of outdoor landscapes. Methods of calculating areas, application rates for fertilizers, and amounts of soil amendments are reviewed during the first session, and a set of homework problems is analyzed during the second session.

The course is approved for 4 hours of Recertification credit in Categories 2, 3A, 3B, 6A, 6B, 6C, and 10 of the NY State Pesticide license. This course is recommended for all HRT Tracks.

Prepare now for the Core (Basic) and Category 3 (Ornamentals and Turf) Pesticide Applicator Certification examinations given by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and required of all pesticide applicators. Either a 3-year work experience or a 30-hour minimum education requirement must be fulfilled before examinations may be taken. Topics include handling, use, storage, application of pesticides, safety, environmental considerations, and insect and disease problems. Several manuals are required. New York State requires that all students must attend all 30-class hours in order to be eligible to take the certification exam.

Examine the use of plants in the landscape with an emphasis on selecting plants based on design criteria, maintenance characteristics, and selecting the right plant for the right place. Learn aspects of special landscape value, such as size, texture, color, and flowering and fruiting seasons. Slides illustrate trees, shrubs, ground covers, annuals, and perennials suitable for landscaping in this region. Class goes outside. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Study design, installation and maintenance strategies for green roofs and green walls. Using case studies, discussion and research, this course will explore practical approaches and standards for the successful implementation of these budding green technologies.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Plant Science-HRT 300 and Soil Science I-HRT 301.

Learn how to effectively use color in plant combinations. Study the color properties of value, hue, and intensity as they relate to choosing specific garden plants, as well as larger design issues like site analysis and seasonal changes. Slide presentation and discussions are used to analyze various color schemes such as analogous or sequential, complementary and monochrome. Design projects will be assigned to explore and reinforce the topics covered in class.
