Everybody talks about green roofs, but what are they and why should we build them? What are the most convincing arguments to build green roofs? Susanne Boyle highlights green roof functions, aesthetic and ecological benefits, and discusses green roofs in the context of our cityscapes. The presentation will offer suggestions on schematic green roof planning and design.
is a Senior Landscape Architect at The RBA Group, a multi disciplinary firm that emphasizes sustainable design. Drawing from her diverse experience in landscape architecture and construction, Susanne has worked on the design and installation of various green roofs in Germany and the tri-state area.

The recently enacted New York tax credit provides an incentive for many property owners to consider building green roofs. Caroline Harris, a land use lawyer who was instrumental in the adoption of the tax credit, will elucidate the criteria that qualify under the law and walk you through the application process. As well, she will discuss other municipal regulations that affect the development of green roofs in New York City.
Caroline Harris is a land use lawyer with The Law Offices of Howard Goldman, LLC in New York City. Robert Crauderueff is the former Policy Director at Sustainable South Bronx and is currently pursing an advanced degree at M.I.T.

Green roofs are gaining attention in the United States as a versatile new environmental mitigation technology, while interest in data on the environmental performance of these systems is growing. Stuart will show some green roof systems being monitored in the New York City area, describe the sensor selection employed to study energy balance, and share samples of selected data.
Stuart Gaffin, Ph.D., is an Associate Research Scientist at the Center for Climate Systems Research at Columbia. His areas of research include the role of urban vegetation (especially green roofs) as a mitigation strategy on the urban heat island effect. He is one of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change "Lead Authors" who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Once a design is finalized, preparations for installation can begin. Gain knowledge of liability, the permit process, and insurance issues. Learn to calculate material quantities and discuss the various ways the material gets up to the roof. Familiarize yourself with the necessary qualifications for the crew that will install the green roof.
J?rg Breuning has nearly 30 years experience in green roof design, installation, and maintenance. As a co-founder of Green Roof Service LLC, he helped the nation's green roof pioneers get started and promote green roof technologies in the U.S.

Green roofs can be more than just alive and green: they can support complex ecosystems built on a foundation of native plants. In densely urban areas, rooftops offer an unparalleled opportunity to expand the area supporting native vegetation. This talk presents research on establishing regionally-native grassland communities that tolerate rooftop environmental conditions.
Matthew Palmer, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology department at Columbia. Dr. Palmer's research on green roofs is an extension of his interest in urban restoration ecology. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers.

Some of the greatest potential space for green roofs has already been built. Existing buildings offer a variety of opportunities and challenges when it comes to green roof implementation. What are they, and how do we meet them? Using case studies and industry standard practices, each detail from the structural capacity of the building to the waterproofing and on to the design and installation of the green roof system will be examined.
Christopher Brunner, co-founder/operator of New York Green Roofs, LLC, has been at the forefront of the green roof movement in New York City. He is a guest lecturer at Project H.I.R.E. and Bronx Community College. He earned his BA from Michigan State University.
