Mia Lehrer, the founding principal of the Los Angeles firm, Mia Lehrer + Associates, was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, and received her MLA from Harvard's Graduate School of Design. She is recognized for progressive designs that explore the role of landscape in the contemporary urban environment and for her work with natural features such as parks, lakes, and rivers. She is also known for her advocacy for sustainable and people-friendly public spaces. A diverse range of recent and current projects includes residential work, historic preservation, urban revitalization, large urban parks, corporate campuses, and watersheds. A sought-after lecturer, among the projects Lehrer will discuss are the Vista Hermosa Natural Park in Los Angeles and the Water + Life Museums in Hemet, California, the first LEED platinum museum campus.

In 1995 landscape architect David Kamp established Dirtworks PC in New York with the design philosophy of providing all people, regardless of their capabilities, an opportunity to connect with nature on their own terms. Dirtworks' award-winning projects, including healthcare and educational facilities, public gardens, and residences, reflect that approach. The firm's work is an ongoing study of the ways in which one experiences and reflects on nature and how nature stimulates memory and the physical senses. He will present several internationally recognized projects, including the Elizabeth and Nona Evans Restorative Garden in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Keene State College Natural Sciences Courtyard in New Hampshire. A Loeb Fellow in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard, Kamp is a guest lecturer at universities and conferences throughout the United States and Europe.

Walter Hood, Professor and former Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and principal of Hood Design in Oakland, has worked in architecture, landscape architecture, art, community and urban design, planning, and research. A former Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, Hood recently designed the gardens and landscape for San Francisco's de Young Museum, working with architects Herzog and de Meuron. His current projects include the Autry National Museum in Los Angeles, an archeological garden at the University of Virginia, and a set of monuments and markers for a six-mile waterfront trail in Oakland. In 2009 he received the prestigious Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. He is currently enrolled in the MFA Program at the Art Institute of Chicago in studio arts and sculpture.

To their mutual amusement and satisfaction, Douglas Hoerr and Peter Lindsay Schaudt have different educational backgrounds and approaches to design. Yet in 2008, they joined their independent firms to form Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, an award-winning, Chicago-based firm focusing on civic, educational, cultural, and residential work. Deeply influenced by his Midwestern roots as well as an unorthodox sabbatical in England, Hoerr expresses confidence in the intersection of design and horticulture, winning accolades for his transformative design of Michigan Avenue, City Garden at Garfield Park Conservatory, and residential gardens. Schaudt's work, particularly at Illinois Institute of Technology and North Burnham Park, articulates the restraint of a "less is more" approach gained from his mentor Dan Kiley.
