Basic Centerpieces and Arrangements

Creating even the simplest floral arrangements requires an understanding of the elements and principles of design and harmony, in addition to the conditioning of flowers and actual construction techniques. With little or no experience, you can master these basics through this series of lectures, demonstrations, workshops, and personal critiques. A materials fee of $175 is due upon registration. Please bring lunch to classes meeting all day.

Basic Centerpieces and Arrangements is a prerequisite for most FLO 300-500 floral arrangement courses. We suggest you enroll in Essential Floral Techniques-FLO 311 and Care and Conditioning-FLO 345 early on in the program.

Prismacolor, AD, or Pantone markers are acceptable.
Prismacolor markers can be applied to photocopies without smudging. AD markers last longer and come in a number of very useful colors. Lightest colors are most useful. In AD markers, for example, cr?me, buff, beige, Naples yellow, warm gray #1, willow green, light ivy, sapphire blue, mauve, indigo blue, and pale flesh are all very useful colors. A wide variety of greens is useful, again in the lighter colors. Only a few bright colors are needed, such as light/medium red, blue, and orange. Black and a very darkblue, such as navy or indigo, are important for shadows.
8. Colored Pencils
Prismacolor, Derwent, and/or Caran d'Ache pencils are suggested. You cannot have too many colors to chose from. Greens should range from yellow-green to blue- green, and from light to dark. Similarly, blues should range from green-blue to red- blue. Numerous earth tones, both light and dark, are needed. These should include such colors as terra cotta, tan, beige, yellow ochre, warm gray, light brown. For working on toned paper (at the end of the term), white and near-white colors will be called for.
