Gilding on Paper

Working on paper in a color medium of your choice (the instructor demonstrates watercolor), paint a simple flower set against a sumptuous gold background as seen in many Medieval and Renaissance paintings. Learn the ancient technique of gilding: applying thin gold leaf on paper in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step process. A materials fee of approximately $50 for a gilding kit and flowers is payable on the first day of class. Please bring lunch.

Choose from two projects. Using a large assortment of fresh greens (boxwood, blue spruce, ivy, cedar, juniper, etc.), we thicken and broaden a 24" pre-made fresh balsam base or white pine roping. Drawing I--Basic

Drawing I is the foundation course of the Botanical Art and Illustration Certificate Program because it teaches the specific techniques for drawing accurately. Learn the professional standards of form, measuring, foreshortening, and perspective.

Materials List

MUST HAVE FOR FIRST CLASS:
- Sense of fun, humor, and the desire to explore and work hard.
- Graphite drawing pencils: At least one of each hardness, any brand: 2H, HB, and 2B
- Erasers: 1 each kneaded and white plastic
- Drawing paper: Strathmore Series 400, REGULAR surface, 14"x17" pad. Strathmore Series 400 Recycled is whiter and just as good to work on. Their Windpower line is also good. Do NOT get sketch or smooth.
- Tracing paper: Pad 9"x12" or larger. Get Canson Calque if you can - it is the most transparent. Do not get heavier "vellum" tracing.
- Pencil sharpeners: The detail of botanical illustration requires a continually sharp pencil. The best: Panasonic KP4A battery operated sharpener which I can now can only find at Amazon.com. Alternate: Prismacolor black bullet-shaped hand sharpener.
- Drafting brush or other soft brush to sweep away eraser crumbs. I use a blush brush which has its own carrying case.
-Tape: Low-tack, repositionable such as Scotch Removable Magic Tape 3/4" or drafting tape. Regular tape risks tearing your paper.
-Ruler: C-Thru brand. Transparent, 6" or longer, 2" wide, printed with grid lines. Used to measure subjects and maintain proportions.
- Scissors
- X-acto knife with #11 blade and small pack of replacement blades. Make sure it comes with a cap.

OPTIONAL
- Eraser shield: Small, flat metal template helps to erase tiny areas
- Saral transfer paper
- Lead holders, leads, lead pointer: Wait until you try them in class.
- Triangle: 12", right angle (90 degrees), metal (so you can cut against it)
- Ruler: Metal with non-slip bottom, 15-24". Used for cutting.

-- Pencils or lead holders: 2H, HB, 2B pencils (any brand)
--Erasers: 1 each kneaded and white plastic (tube style if possible)
-- Drawing paper: Strathmore Series 400, REGULAR surface, 14"x17" pad. Strathmore Series 400 Recycled is whiter and just as good to work on. Their Windpower line is also good. Do NOT get sketch or smooth.
-- Tracing paper: Pad 9"x12" or larger. Get Canson Calque if you can - it is the most transparent. Do not get heavier "vellum" tracing.
--Pencil sharpeners: The best: Panasonic KP4A battery operated sharpener which I can now can only find at Amazon.com. Alternate: Prismacolor black bullet-shaped hand sharpener.
-- Drafting brush or other soft brush to sweep away eraser crumbs. I use a blush brush which has its own carrying case.
-- Tape: Low-tack, repositionable such as Scotch Removable Magic Tape 3/4" or drafting tape.
-- Ruler: C-Thru brand. Transparent, 6" or longer, 2" wide, printed with grid lines. Used to measure subjects and maintain proportions.
-- Scissors
-- X-acto knife with #11 blade and small pack of replacement blades. Make sure it comes with a cap
-- Inexpensive pre-cut mat 8x12" or larger, cut into framing "L's" - I can show you how to do this in class.
-- Magnifying lens: Get one with a clamp or stand or figure out some way of keeping both hands free.
-- Sheet of mounting or illustration board that is black on one side, white on the other, 14"x17" or larger and a means to stand it up (to use as a simplifying background for flower.)
-- Something to arrange your flowers, keep them fresh, and get them home safely, for instance:
-- Arrange: vase, jar, frog, florist foam ('oasis'), various types of clips, X-Acto "third hand", velcro tape, masking tape, straight pins, florists wire...
-- Transport: baggies, paper towels and rubber bands or foil, plastic containers, shopping bags, etc.

Pruning Principles and Practices

This course combines class study and hands-on pruning, matching knowledge to practice. Topics include woody plant structure and physiology as it relates to pruning; correct pruning techniques and tools; pruning timing; and pruning as an integral part of plant health care. Pruning of trees and shrubs, conifers and broadleaves, and evergreen and deciduous plants are covered. Creation and maintenance of hedges is considered, along with authentic pollarding techniques. Capturing Your Beautiful Flowers with a Scanner

For digital photographers, floral arrangers, gardeners, and artists who love flowers, try something new with quick and creative results - scan fresh and preserved flowers, bouquets, and individual flower parts and transfer them to Photoshop for digital enhancement. Emphasis will be on Photoshop or iPhoto's image editing software that can adjust and retouch the scan, as well as produce different backgrounds, colorations, and styles. This is a great technique for producing your own line of greeting cards or announcements. Bring to class 3 to 5 cut flowers for possible scanning.

--Drawing paper: Strathmore Series 400, REGULAR surface, 14"x17" pad. Strathmore Series 400 Recycled is whiter and just as good to work on. Their Windpower line is also good. Do NOT get sketch or smooth.
--Tracing paper: Pad 9"x12" or larger. Get Canson Calque if you can - it is the most transparent. Do not get heavier "vellum" tracing.
-- Pencil sharpeners: The detail of botanical illustration requires a continually sharp pencil. The best: Panasonic KP4A battery operated sharpener which I can now can only find at Amazon.com. Alternate: Prismacolor black bullet-shaped hand sharpener.
-- Drafting brush or other soft brush to sweep away eraser crumbs. I use a blush brush which has its own carrying case.
--Tape: Low-tack, repositionable such as Scotch Removable Magic Tape 3/4" or drafting tape. Regular tape risks tearing your paper.
-- Ruler: C-Thru brand. Transparent, 6" or longer, 2" wide, printed with grid lines. Used to measure subjects and maintain proportions.
-- Scissors
-- X-acto knife with #11 blade and small pack of replacement blades. Make sure it comes with a cap.

OPTIONAL
-- Eraser shield: Small, flat metal template helps to erase tiny areas
-- Saral transfer paper
-- Lead holders, leads, lead pointer: Wait until you try them in class.
-- Triangle: 12", right angle (90 degrees), metal (so you can cut against it)
-- Ruler: Metal with non-slip bottom, 15-24". Used for cutting.
