Ornamental Garden Design

Learn the basics of ornamental garden design by applying the fundamental principles of design in this studio-oriented course. Dendrology: Woody Plant Identification

The native plant communities of eastern North America form a forest from towering tulip trees to creeping partridge berries. Learn how to identify trees, shrubs, and woody vines by means of vegetative characters focusing on native and naturalized species, as well as some of the species most commonly planted in New York City. Workshop: Patterns and Textures in the Garden

Patterns, textures, and beautiful forms can be found everywhere in a garden. Spend the day exploring The New York Botanical Garden, photographing the designs that have long inspired artists, and deepening your awareness of light. With individual instruction this course covers using natural light and color effectively, incorporating visual design and composition for impact, successfully translating what your eye sees into a photograph, and enhancing your overall photographic skills. We will shoot early in the morning to take advantage of the best light then critique the morning's work (if made digitally) at lunch, and use the afternoon to apply what we have learned back out in the field. Participants should have basic knowledge of their equipment and a working knowledge of aperture/shutter relationships, exposure control, and depth of field.

Landscape Design Portfolios: Beyond Chicago: Influences and Projects

To their mutual amusement and satisfaction, Douglas Hoerr and Peter Lindsay Schaudt have different educational backgrounds and approaches to design. Yet in 2008, they joined their independent firms to form Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, an award-winning, Chicago-based firm focusing on civic, educational, cultural, and residential work. Deeply influenced by his Midwestern roots as well as an unorthodox sabbatical in England, Hoerr expresses confidence in the intersection of design and horticulture, winning accolades for his transformative design of Michigan Avenue, City Garden at Garfield Park Conservatory, and residential gardens. Schaudt's work, particularly at Illinois Institute of Technology and North Burnham Park, articulates the restraint of a "less is more" approach gained from his mentor Dan Kiley.
